A hotel official in Myeongdong said on the 21st that he has been experiencing a renewed vibrancy in the neighborhood recently.
The Myeongdong business district, which once suffered a severe downturn due to the coronavirus, is now bustling with tourists of various nationalities, including those from Southeast Asia, Japan, and Europe.
According to the Seoul Tourism Organization, 4,920 people visited the Myeongdong Tourist Information Center in March and April, up 173 percent from the same period last year. Of these, foreigners accounted for 4,252, or 86 percent.
The recovery of Myeongdong’s commercial district can also be gauged by the increase in foot traffic.
According to information released by the Seoul Metropolitan Government on the number of people getting on and off at each station, 1.524 million people got on and off at Myeongdong Station in April, up 78% from the same period last year.
This is 75% of the pre-COVID-19 level of 2,592,904 passengers in April 2019.

Hotels in and around Myeongdong are bustling with activity as foreign tourists continue to arrive.
The average room occupancy rate of major hotels is between 80 and 90 percent, and the number of foreign guests has increased to nine out of 10.
Nine Tree Hotel Myeongdong and Nine Tree Premier Hotel Myeongdong II, operated by Parnas Hotels, recorded an average occupancy rate of over 90% in April.
From January to April this year, the average percentage of foreign guests at the two hotels was 80 percent, more than six times higher than the same period last year.
A representative from Parnas Hotel said, “The percentage of foreign guests has been gradually increasing since the second half of last year, but it has been increasing in earnest since the beginning of this year,” adding, “We have recovered the pre-corona level.”
L7 Myeongdong and Lotte City Hotel Myeongdong also had average room occupancy rates above 90% in April. The proportion of foreign guests at L7 Myeongdong and Lotte City Hotel Myeongdong is 95 percent and 90 percent, respectively.
Four Points by Sheraton Myeongdong, operated by Chosun Hotels & Resorts, recorded an average occupancy rate of 90% and a foreign guest rate of 90% in April.
Le Méridien & Moxy Seoul Myeongdong, which opened in Myeongdong last November, also recorded an average occupancy rate of 80% in April. The proportion of foreign guests was 85%.
“We have a high percentage of international tourists and business guests,” said a representative from L’Hermitage & Moxy, “with many visitors from the United States, China, Japan, and Singapore.”
